Kanawha County Schools announced today that they're accepting applications for elementary school students to enroll in the KCS virtual online school program, which will begin this Fall. The elementary pilot program will allow 15 Kanawha County 3rd -5th graders to participate in a full-time or part-time virtual school program. This program is free to students who are currently being homeschooled and public school students in Kanawha County. Applications are available at the Kanawha County Schools board office or on the KCS virtual online page. Parents must apply by May 17th.

“After successful pilot programs with both our middle school and high school populations, we have designed a program for elementary school students that will allow for increased flexibility for those who need it most,” said Kanawha County Schools Executive Director of Virtual School, Valery Harper. “We know through experience and successes the support system that needs to be in place to help students. We look forward to expanding this program and its support system to elementary school students.”

The Kanawha County Schools virtual program, and other virtual programs across the state, are possible after state lawmakers passed Senate Bill 630 - the Accessibility and Equity in Public Education Enhancement Act - during the 2017 regular legislative session. The bill allows for the creation of virtual programs by county boards. There are currently 155 students participating in the KCS virtual program at the middle school and high school level.
