KCS Recognized for their Commitment to Students of Military Families
Posted on 12/08/2021

Kanawha County Schools (KCS) was recognized by the WV Department of Education (WVDE) for their commitment to students of military families through the Purple Star Award program.

Per the WVDE, Purple Star Award program recipients are schools and districts that have committed to providing dedicated support and services to students of military families. The Purple Star Award recognizes schools and districts who make a focused commitment to meet the needs of military-connected children by identifying a trained military family point of contact, linking to resources on their homepage, completing a minimum of two military support activities and submitting a localized plan of action. Their commitment provides a foundation for students of military families to develop productive, academic lives and to be a part of a supportive community.

Students of military families may experience circumstances and added stress due to the unpredictable nature of deployments. Schools that have caring and dedicated staff members can make a difference for those uncertain times. Additionally, proactive communication between schools and military families can help with social-emotional problems and negative behaviors.

In total, 130 schools earned the Purple Star Award distinction. Kanawha was just one of three counties honored for having 100% participation among all their schools. Superintendent Tom Williams attended the ceremony and was awarded a Purple Start District banner for the special distinction.
