Infectious Disease Procedures

These guidelines are at the discretion of the professional school nurse.

  • Fifth's Disease Student not excluded from school unless he/she has a fever (100°) or greater

  • Fever Must be without fever (no fever 100° or above) for 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Chicken Pox Exclude for 5 days or until all blisters are dried and scabbed over. Must also be without a fever for 24 hours.

  • Hand, Foot, Mouth Exclude for 5 days or until all blisters are dried and scabbed over.

  • Must be without a fever for 24 hours.

  • Scabies Must have note from a licensed health care provider that includes diagnosis. May return to school as soon as treatment is completed.

  • Strep Throat Must be treated with prescribed antibiotics for 24 hours. Must be without fever for 24 hours.

  • Mononucleosis Must have a note from a licensed health care provider with diagnosis and date for return to school.

  • Influenza Must be without fever for 24 hours.

  • Pink Eye Must have 24 hours of prescribed antibiotics before return to school.

  • Ringworm (scalp) Must have a note from a licensed health care provider with diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • May return to school when treatment is initiated.

  • (body) May return to school after topical antifungal treatment is initiated.

  • Gastroenteritis Must have absence of vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Impetigo Must have note from a licensed health care provider with diagnosis and treatment. Must be on medication for 24 hours before returning to school.

  • Herpes Simplex Cover blister(s) if possible. If the student has more than two active lesions and they are spreading from the lip area, a note from a licensed health care provider will be needed for return to school.
