On November 8, 2022, Kanawha County voters approved a continued excess levy to focus on priority areas of: staff retention and school positions, safety and security, additional HVAC/roofing needs, and facility/extracurricular needs at the middle school and high school level.

The 2022 Excess Levy that was approved will fund the following priorities beginning in 2024 (summary and numbers provided are for first year):

  • $37,785,048 for professional, service and substitute wages, including specific funds for custodians, counselors and art teachers.
  • $2,496,000 for additional staff including seven additional counselors, five additional nurses, fourteen additional special education staff and more.
  • $2,737,000 for safety & security improvements across the district including weapon detection systems in our high schools, secure entrances at every school that does not have one and additional security team staff.
  • $11,157,089 for HVAC & roofing improvements at 10 schools with the greatest need.
  • and, $7,489,590 for facility & extracurricular needs across the county including tennis courts (with pickleball striping), baseball/softball turf, tracks, raises for coaches, scoreboards and more.
