New Teacher Mentoring
Whether you are brand new to the classroom, or if you have just a
little bit of experience, you will find our beginning teacher mentor
program to be helpful as you advance in your teaching career.
For
immediate experience at your school site, you will be assigned a
school-based mentor. This will be a teacher on staff who will be able to
help you with questions you have about things specific to your school.
If you don't already know, find out who this person is, and feel free to
ask them about things such as getting materials and textbooks, copying
materials, computer assistance, obtaining a substitute, etc.
For
support in the classroom, you will have an Academic Coach. This person
will visit your classroom regularly, and provide you support and
feedback on issues such as instructional strategies, classroom
management, and other questions you might have about curriculum and
instruction.
You will be attending regular meetings with other
beginning teachers, gaining valuable information and networking with
educational professionals. Professional development is a core component
of the program. Lead mentors use knowledge and skills gained to support
teacher-learning structures at their schools.
The Charleston Area
The Charleston Area is the largest metropolitan area
in the state of West Virginia. Charleston is the capital city and
government seat of West Virginia. Residents of the Charleston Area have
the benefit of being in or close to the capital city of West Virginia,
with all the cultural and entertainment advantages that brings. At the
same time, the Charleston Area is a tranquil, small-city environment
with easy access to the Appalachian Mountains.
The Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center has the world's top recording artists in country, pop, rock, jazz and
Christian perform. Charleston has outdoor festivals that feature live
music from all over the world. In late June, the riverfront is packed
with visitors for Blues, Brews & BBQ, which brings a full day of
blues, followed by Wine and All That Jazz, a day of jazz performers and
wine tastings from West Virginia vineyards. Learn more about FestivALL. The NPR radio show Mountain Stage is produced in Charleston.
Stroll through downtown Charleston during monthly art walks to
explore the fine local galleries. Take a tour of the State Capitol, the
Governor's Mansion, or the historic East End. Visit the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, home to the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Avampato Discovery Museum.
Charleston is a family-friendly city full of things to see and do for people of all ages. Everything is close by. Capitol Market, West Virginia's best source for home-grown produce, plants, and flowers is located here. West Virginia Power, Charleston's minor league baseball team, plays in Power Park from April through August. Enjoy local shopping at Bridge Road shops
that features unique businesses with art, food, clothing, toys and
jewelry. The Charleston Town Center Mall offers three indoor floors.
Southridge, Trace Fork, and Dudley Farms are on U.S. Route 119 South and
have an extensive venue of well-known anchor stores.
Charleston offers outdoor excitement, including skiing, whitewater
rafting, ATV and mountain bike trails, horseback riding, rock climbing,
canoeing, kayaking and hiking. In the winter, West Virginia offers the
best skiing in the Southeast, with Snowshoe, Silver Creek, and Canaan
Valley resorts all within a four-hour drive, and Winterplace only an
hour away.
