As KCS seniors consider what comes after graduation, U.S. service academies offer a path that combines a college education with preparation for leadership and service to the country. For students interested in military or maritime careers, these academies may be an option to explore with their families.
U.S. Senator Jim Justice’s office is accepting applications from West Virginia students seeking nominations to four service academies:
U.S. Air Force Academy
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
U.S. Military Academy at West Point
U.S. Naval Academy
Applications and all required materials must be submitted by Friday, October 23, 2026.
A nomination is an important step in the admissions process, but it does not guarantee acceptance. Students must also apply directly to the academies, which make the final admission decisions.
To get started, seniors and their families should review the academy options and eligibility requirements on Senator Justice’s website. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and legal residents of West Virginia, graduate from high school before July 1 of the year they enter the academy, and meet age and other eligibility requirements.
The nomination application includes a short essay and requires supporting materials such as recommendation letters, an official high school transcript, test score reports and a current photo. Families should gather those materials before starting because the online form must be completed in one sitting and cannot be saved for later.
Students must also open a candidate file directly with the academies before the nomination interview in December.
Students and families with questions can contact Senator Justice’s Charleston office at 304-342-5855 or academy@justice.senate.gov.
