Gianna Desper, a Dunbar Middle School student, earned the West Virginia state title in the VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest. The nationwide competition challenges middle school students to write about a patriotic theme. Below is Gianna’s winning essay responding to “What Is Patriotism to Me.”

Have you ever stopped to think about what it really means to love our country? Patriotism isn't just about waving our flag our singing our national anthem: It's about showing respect, gratitude, and pride for the United States in our everyday lives and actions. I show my patriotism by honoring those who serve, participating in American activities, and doing my part to make America a better place.

One way I show my patriotism is by supporting veterans, and active duty soldiers. Every year, I participate in school events around Veterans Day by writing letters and making cards for local veterans. I also stand with pride when the national anthem plays at games and assemblies. These small actions may seem simple, but they remind us that the freedoms we enjoy were earned through great sacrifice.

In my community, I join others to show patriotism though service. Together we clean up litter around our school and neighborhood. This gives me a feeling of pride knowing I'm helping to keep my community strong and beautiful. I also donate food around the holidays for families in need, showing that being a good citizen is a part of being a good American. Working together to make our community better is one of the most patriotic things we can do.

Throughout history, Americans have shown their love for our country in many ways. During World War II, people planted victory gardens and worked together to support soldiers overseas. Today, we can show that same spirit by helping others, voting, and standing up for what is right. Patriotism is about continuing the hard work that past generations performed to keep America free and strong, and I am trying to continue these great traditions.

To me, patriotism means caring for our great country and the people who make it great. I show my love for America by respecting our flag, helping others, and giving back to my community. Every time I do something kind or helpful, I'm doing my small part to keep the American spirit alive. Patriotism isn't something we say; patriotism is something we live every day.
