Kanawha County Schools is excited to introduce the newly formed KCS Student Leadership Team, a districtwide group focused on elevating student voice and student leadership across all middle and high schools.
The team includes two student representatives from each middle and high school, bringing together diverse perspectives from across the county. High school co-presidents Blake Leavitt (Riverside High School) and Miley Mullins (Nitro High School) are helping guide the team’s work and vision for the year.

Student Leadership Team Goals
Early in the process, the Student Leadership Team identified four key goals that will drive their efforts and impact schools throughout KCS:
Ensure Every Student’s Voice Is Heard
The team will create opportunities for students to share ideas, provide feedback, and take part in planning activities that improve their school experience.
Create Safe and Welcoming School Communities
Students are committed to promoting inclusion, preventing bullying, and supporting a school culture where everyone feels safe and accepted. This includes intentional efforts to better include students in self-contained ID and AU programs.
Connect Students with Needed Resources
The team will help raise awareness of available resources such as school supplies and hygiene items, while also supporting attendance initiatives that encourage students to be present and engaged.
Build School Spirit and Celebrate Success
By organizing events and recognizing student and teacher achievements, the team aims to strengthen school pride and create a positive, supportive atmosphere across KCS.
Bridging the Gap
The KCS Student Leadership Team serves as a bridge between students and district leadership, ensuring student perspectives help inform conversations and future planning. The team was recently introduced to the KCS Board of Education, marking an early milestone in this new initiative.

Building Leaders
This student-led effort reflects KCS’s commitment to listening to students, empowering young leaders, and building schools where every student feels valued. The work is just beginning, and the impact of the KCS Student Leadership Team will continue to grow throughout the school year.
