Ms. Kizmet Chandler, a teacher at Nitro High School and Ms. Emily Rinick, a junior at Nitro High School have been selected to attend The Albert H. Small Normandy Institute. Chandler and Rinick are one of fifteen student-teacher teams selected for this learning experience. They are the first student-teacher team to have ever been selected to represent the state of West Virginia.

The Institute is an intensive program to learn about the D-Day Campaign of 1944 and the sacrifices made by young Americans to defeat tyranny. From June 15 through June 28, 2019, Institute members will travel to the campus of The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for a series of lectures and activities to deepen their understanding of elements of the conflict. Finally, the students and teachers will participate in a “staff-ride” (participatory educational tour led by GW professors) of many of the sites that played a role in the Normandy Campaign in France. Each student will be called upon to present a briefing concerning some element of the campaign at the appropriate site.

Chandler currently teaches AP Government, Civics and United States Studies. She has attended the Gilder Lehrman Institute, ‘We the People' and most recently participated in the SREB ‘High Schools That Work' conference. She also has been a presenter for the WV State Social Studies Conference and with the WV Center for Professional Development. Chandler is the 2018 Gilder Lehrman West Virginia History Teacher of the Year.

“Over the course of her time her at Nitro High School, Ms. Chandler has proven to be an invaluable asset to the staff,” said Jason Redman, Nitro High School Principal. “She has shown that she is not only dedicated to her students, she is also dedicated to improving the school-community relationship. Ms. Chandler has also established a great relationship with her students and helps to promote the school motto of love, learning and leadership.”

Rinick is currently an eleventh-grade student at Nitro High School. She has been awarded three National AFJROTC Awards and is a member of the AFJROTC National Honor Society. For the 2017-2018 academic year, she was awarded the Air Commando Association Leadership National Award. Emily also won the Tuskegee Airmen National Outstanding Cadet Award in 2017.

Chandler spoke of Rinick's abilities by saying, “Emily exemplifies the ‘whole person' concept that is sought by colleges and universities--her sense of character is superb and she leads by example with courage, maturity, and charisma. She is involved in the community and achieves high academic standards as a citizen-scholar. Emily clearly has the passion, discipline, and leadership skills to achieve anything she focuses on.”

The Albert H Small Normandy Institute is made possible through the generous contributions of Mr. Albert H. Small.
