Ms. Kizmet Chandler, a teacher at Nitro High School and Ms. Emily Rinick, a rising senior at Nitro High School are currently participating in The Albert H. Small Normandy Institute. Chandler and Rinick are one of fifteen student-teacher teams selected for this learning experience. They are the first student-teacher team to have ever been selected to represent the state of West Virginia.

Chandler and Rinick have been participating in the Institute for the last six months all the while researching a West Virginia solider buried at The American Cemetery at Normandy. Today, Rinick paid tribute to her soldier, Mitchell Woods Bacon by reading a eulogy and laying a rose for remembrance.

Chandler currently teaches AP Government, Civics and United States Studies. She has attended the Gilder Lehrman Institute, ‘We the People' and most recently participated in the SREB ‘High Schools That Work' conference. She also has been a presenter for the WV State Social Studies Conference and with the WV Center for Professional Development. Chandler is the 2018 Gilder Lehrman West Virginia History Teacher of the Year.

Rinick is a rising twelfth-grade student at Nitro High School. She has been awarded three National AFJROTC Awards and is a member of the AFJROTC National Honor Society. For the 2017-2018 academic year, she was awarded the Air Commando Association Leadership National Award. Emily also won the Tuskegee Airmen National Outstanding Cadet Award in 2017. Most recently she received The Billy Michal Student Leadership Award from The National World War II Museum.

The Albert H Small Normandy Institute is made possible through the generous contributions of Mr. Albert H. Small.

Chandler and Rinick spent June 15-20 in Washington, DC, and June 21-27 in France.
