As part of their SEL curriculum, students at Dunbar Primary Center spent time reading and discussing “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds. The story follows a girl named Vashti who works to discover her artistic talent. She originally dislikes art class because she can’t draw, but her teacher encourages her to begin with a single dot to spark her creativity.
Dunbar Primary students discussed Vashti’s thoughts and actions at the beginning versus the end of the story and created a Venn diagram with their findings. Then, each student created their own dot on paper plates to design a beautiful mural in the hallway.
