Appalachian Power Presents KCS with “Sustained Excellence Champion” Award

In its first year of giving energy management awards, Appalachian Power has selected Kanawha County Schools to receive its “Sustained Excellence Champion” award. The award recognizes Kanawha County Schools' utilization of Appalachian's TakeCharge program as part of an ongoing commitment to improving energy efficiency while increasing the quality of the school environment for students.

“For more than a decade, Kanawha County Schools has been working on improving energy efficiency throughout the district through our electrician and electronics team,” said Dr. Ron Duerring, Superintendent of Kanawha County Schools. “Our workers' dedication has meant rebates for upgraded, LED lighting, all while reducing our electric bills. We thank our KCS maintenance staff along with Appalachian Power for their recognition of the dedication to improved energy management.”

Kanawha County was the only K-12 school system to be recognized this year. The full list of award winners includes:

Sustained Excellence Award

  • Kanawha County Board of Education

  • Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia

  • West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection

  • U.S. National Mine Health and Safety Academy

Energy Efficiency Champions

  • Marshall University

  • The City of Bluefield

  • Tasty Blend Foods

  • Verizon Wireless

Kanawha County Schools projects have begun or been completed so far at: Lakewood Elementary, Carver Career Center, Anne Bailey Elementary, Capital High School, Andrew Jackson Middle School, Nitro High School, Bridge Elementary, Malden Elementary, Piedmont Elementary, Alban Elementary, Nitro Elementary, Alum Creek Elementary, DuPont Middle School and South Charleston High School. The district warehouse has also seen improvements and community members will see the use of solar powered school zone lights. Energy savings projects will continue across the district.
