KCS Announces 2020 Teacher of the Year

Chef Thomas (Tommy) Grant has been named the Kanawha County Schools 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year! Chef Grant is certified through the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and is the manager and instructor of the ProStart Culinary Arts Program at Carver Career and Technical Education Center. 

Chef Grant has inspired students at Carver CTE Center since he initiated the ProStart program in 2005.  He is a member and past president of the ACF and the James Beard, Good Food for Good Foundation. In addition to numerous awards and recognitions in the field of culinary arts, Chef Grant is a past WV CTE Teacher of the Year. Chef Grant and KCS students from Carver’s ProStart Program are well-known in the Kanawha Valley for their catering skills at both public and private events.

In early March 2020, the Culinary and Restaurant Management ProStart teams competed in the WV Hospitality Education and Training’s (HEAT) 2020 Hospitality Cup, winning first place in both categories.

Chef Grant will be submitted to the WV Department of Education for consideration for the WV Teacher of the Year.
