Security & Safety Procedures Relating to School Threat

Given the uptick in threats made and reported by students after last week’s school shooting in Florida, we wanted to share our security and safety process to all members of our community.

  • Once a threat comes in, whether it’s reported to the school system or law enforcement, there is a joint investigation. School leadership, district administrators and law enforcement share information needed to investigate the report.
  • Every threat – no matter the evidence – is investigated.
  • The investigation takes place as quickly as possible.
  • Once the investigation has concluded, action is taken if warranted and precautionary measures, including additional police presence at our schools, is put in place if needed.

Students are being charged and action is being taken. In each instance where there is proven misconduct or criminal activity, students are being held accountable, including the felony arrest of a student last week. If there is not a criminal charge, students may be disciplined based upon a violation of the Kanawha County Schools student code of conduct. That policy is available here. These threats are all serious, and they’re being taken seriously.

We encourage parents and students to continue to report what they’re seeing.

The district, along with law enforcement, are working 24/7 to ensure the safety of our students and employees.

We greatly appreciate the relationship we have with all of our local law enforcement agencies. They are supporting our school system day and night, as we also execute our daily, comprehensive security measures in each and every school.
