Nitro Elementary third grader Kimberly D. is the West Virginia first prize winner in the Achieve 3000 Christmas break reading contest called "Make the Break". There were 27,000 entries nation wide.

The contest was created to encourage students to continue using the Achieve3000 program over the holiday break and maintain the growth they worked so hard to achieve over the first semester.

This contest was held for two weeks during the month of December when most schools were out of session for the holidays. To be entered into the contest a student had to log onto the website and complete four activities and earn a 75% or higher in response to the article read. Kimberly completed ten articles over the two weeks and earned an 88%- 100% on all ten articles.
