Kanawha County Schools administrators put a great deal of thought into a plan and listened to feedback from every stakeholder group. The state law requirement of 180 days of instructional time was not waived, but we were given the opportunity to be flexible. We believe that the following plan best meets our legal requirements and supports our academic and strategic goals. In addition, we have encouraged schools to be flexible when working with families.

The original last day for students on the 2017-2018 academic calendar was May 21 with 5 days built in for optional makeup days – May 22-25 & May 29. KCS had four snow days, one of which was absorbed by additional instructional minutes and the cancellation of early outs.

Due to the statewide work stoppage, there are 9 more instructional days that must be made up in accordance with state law. Our schools will have enough banked instructional time by the end of the year to eliminate four of those days for students, bringing it down to 5 work stoppage days and 3 snow days to be made up.

  • Kanawha County Schools will not be taking away students’ Spring Break.
  • Our student makeup days will be added at the end of the year. Students’ last day will be June 1.
  • Staff will make up 13 days (9 works stoppage and 4 snow days). All staff, including teachers, will work through June 11. Teachers will participate in professional development June 4-8, with an additional closeout day on June 11. Within this plan, all 200-day employees will fulfill their contract requirements.
  • Final exams will be adjusted accordingly at local schools. They will share information with parents about their testing.
