Scorch, string orchestra, will perform at the 2017 ASTA National Orchestra Festival

Congratulations and Kudos to Scorch!

On May 20th, Scorch, a string orchestra composed of the combined string classes from Capital High School, George Washington High School, Herbert Hoover High School, and South Charleston High School, traveled to Buckhannon, WV to participate in the 2016 WV Orchestra Festival.  This festival, sponsored by the WV chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) and held in association with the WV Strawberry Festival, is an opportunity for school orchestras from across the region to perform in front of adjudicators, rated on their performance, and participate in educational clinics in order to improve their performance.

Scorch was selected as one of twelve public high school string orchestras to perform at the 2017 ASTA National Orchestra Festival, which will be held in Pittsburgh from March 1st to 4th.  Like the WV Orchestra Festival, the National Orchestra Festival is an opportunity for public and private school orchestras to perform, rated, and provided feedback by a panel of adjudicators.  An educational clinic is provided immediately after the performance.  The judges and clinicians are all highly distinguished strings teachers and are national recognized as experts in the field.  Furthermore, the students of the combined Kanawha County High School Orchestra will have the opportunity to participate in the presentations and seminars, including master classes, during the associated ASTA National Conference, held at the same time in the same city.  The students will also have time to visit places of interest in this culturally rich city.

Inclusion in next year’s National Orchestra Festival was decided by a competitive audition process, with written applications, ensemble competition history, recommendations by collegiate strings teacher, and sample recordings all being taken into account.  Along with Scorch, schools from Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Texas, California, Michigan, and Minnesota were also invited to perform at this festival.

Competitive groups perform for placement within their own division: Middle School, High School, or Youth Orchestra. The NOF has two Grand Champions, both of whom will play in the NOF Concert on Saturday, March 4, 2017, and is open to all attendees of the National Conference. There will be a Grand Champion for the Public School Division and one from the Private School/Youth Orchestra Division.
