Andrew Jackson Middle School Students Excel in County, Regional, and State Academic Competitions

Geography Bee - Surya Perla (7th Grade), of Andrew Jackson Middle School in Kanawha County, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2015 West Virginia National Geographic State Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The contest will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015 at Concord University, 1000 Vermillion Street in Athens.

MathCounts – Surya Perla (7th Grade), was recently named a MathCounts State finalist after a Saturday completion in Braxton County. Surya finished 9th out of all middle school competitors.

Math Field Day – Robert Carter (7th Grade), was recently named the county level winner for 7th grade. He went on to the Math Field Day Regional Competition held at West Virginia State University where he finished 2nd in the Regionals. Danielle Witt (8th Grade), was named the county alternate for 8th grade.

Spelling Bee – Lauren Volk (8th Grade), was the county winner this year in the Spelling Bee. She went on to the Regionals, held at Capital High School, where she finished 3rd in the Region.

History Bowl – A team from AJMS recently wowed the crowd at the History Bowl Play In held at Buckhannon Upshur High School. AJ Team #1 (Lauren Volk, Danielle Witt, and Jacob Arnott) won the Play-In Championship! They are eligible to play at the State Championship on May 5th. Everyone seemed quite impressed with the team since they went undefeated in the largest competition that they have ever held (30 teams total).
